In New South Wales, the Bush Fire Danger Period is effective from October 1 to March 31. During this period special laws apply to the lighting of fires and barbecues. This period can sometimes be extended by the Commissioner Rural Fire Services.

Total Fire bans are usually in force during periods of extreme fire danger and may last between 12 and 72 hours, usually starting from midnight. During this period:

·         All permits are cancelled.

·         No fires of any description may be lit in the open air. This includes all barbecues and incinerators that burn solid fuel such as wood or charcoal.

·         You may use a gas or electric barbecue, but only if it is on a residential property and with in 20 metres of the house or dwelling or in an area with council approval. The ground around the barbecue must be clear of all combustible material for at least 3 metres and must be under the direct supervision of an adult. You must have a ready and continuous supply of water at hand at all times.

Penalties of offences are up to $5000 or up 12 months jail
