During the cooler months of autumn and spring, Rural Fire Brigades perform controlled hazard reduction burns. These fires are exhaustively planned and require the commitment of many brigades. They are intended to reduce the amount of surface fuel available to a fire without causing unnecessary harm to undergrowth and more established trees. This is designed to reduce fire fuel hazards and so rob a wild fire of fuel. Hazard reductions are not taken lightly and are performed in areas of known danger and historical fire paths. As much as we like to live in the bush, there is a price to pay - the danger of bushfire. Rural Fire Brigades do their best to reduce hazards in and around their community but rely heavily on land owners doing their bit to reduce hazards around their own properties. Contact the local Rural Fire Brigade Captain or Fire Control Centre if you are concerned about a hazard in your area.
